  • Sealants

Sealants protect your child’s teeth from decay. Sealants are placed on the biting surfaces of premolars and molars to seal the grooves and pits of the teeth. The teeth are prepped for the sealant application and the sealant is painted directly on the chewing surface of the teeth and then hardens. Sealants are applied in one visit.

Restorative Dentistry

Restorative Dentistry is essentially a catch-all phrase that describes the art of restoring damaged and lost teeth. Modern dentistry has made it possible for our doctors to fix teeth in a natural way, without use of any visible metal restorative materials.

  • White Composite Fillings

In terms of fillings, our doctors generally place white composite fillings which look most natural, are mercury free and comfortable for you.

  • Crowns

If the damage to your tooth is more extensive, our doctors choose to protect a tooth by covering it with a porcelain crown, also known as a cap. This protection distributes stress to the tooth in a more favorable manner, which in turn makes it stronger and more long-lasting.

  • Bridges and Implant Crowns

If you have a missing tooth or teeth, our doctors might suggest a dental bridge. For a long time, bridges were one of dentistry’s few solutions for a missing tooth. Our doctors are experts at restoring your mouth to its proper alignment and your smile to its natural brilliance.

Dental implants are another newer aspect of restorative dentistry, typically used for people who have wither lost teeth or are going to need teeth extracted. This process provides an artificial tooth to replace what is or will be missing. Although the implant option has only really achieved popularity in the last 20 years, implants are probably the best way for a restorative dentist to replace teeth that are missing or have a poor prognosis.

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure used to treat gum disease. During the scaling process, specialized dental instruments are used to remove dental plaque and calculus from beneath the gums. Planing is the procedure used to smooth the tooth’s root after the scaling process. Root planing helps the gums heal and reattach themselves to a cleaner and smoother root surface.

Dental laser surgery uses a beam of intense light to correct dental problems. The energy produced by the laser cuts or vaporizes the tissue it is concentrated on. Laser surgery often means less discomfort, an easier and quicker recovery time and fewer shorter appointments.

    - Lasers have several uses for dental surgery. Some common types of dental laser surgery include but are not limited to: dental cavities, root canals, gum surgery, dental abscess, biopsy, and treatment of lesions.

  • Extractions and Wisdom Teeth

Third molars, commonly referred to as wisdom teeth, are usually the last four of 32 teeth to erupt (surface) in the mouth, generally making their appearance between the ages of 17 to 25. They are located at the back of the mouth (top and bottom), near the entrance to the throat. The term “wisdom” stems from the idea that the molars surface at a time typically associated with increased maturity or “wisdom”.

    - In most cases, inadequate space in the mouth does not allow the wisdom teeth to erupt properly and become fully functional. When this happens, the tooth can become impacted (stuck) in an undesirable or potentially harmful position. If left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can contribute to infection, damage to other teeth, and possibly cysts or tumors.

There are several types, or degrees, of impaction based on the actual depth of the teeth within the jaw:

     - Soft Tissue Impaction: The upper portion of the tooth (the crown) has penetrated through the bone, but the gingiva (gum) is covering part or all of the tooth’s crown and has not positioned properly around the tooth. Because it is difficult to keep the area clean, food can become trapped below the gum and cause an infection and/or tooth decay, resulting in pain and swelling.

Partial Bony Impaction: The tooth has partially erupted, but a portion of the crown remains submerged below the gum and surrounding jawbone. Again, because it is difficult to keep the area clean, infection will commonly occur.

    - Complete Bony Impaction: The tooth is completely encased by jawbone. This will require more complex removal techniques.

Reasons for removal of wisdom teeth

    - While not all wisdom teeth require removal, wisdom teeth extractions are most often performed because of an active problem such as pain, swelling, decay or infection, or as a preventative measure to avoid serious problems in the future. If impaction of one or more wisdom teeth is present, and left untreated, a number of potentially harmful outcomes can occur, including:

Damage to nearby teeth: Second molars (the teeth directly in front of the wisdom teeth) can be adversely affected by impacted wisdom teeth, resulting in tooth decay (cavities), periodontal disease (gum disease) and possible bone loss.

    • Disease: Although uncommon, cysts and tumors can occur in the areas surrounding impacted wisdom teeth.

Infection: Bacteria and food can become trapped under the gum tissue, resulting in an infection. The infection can cause considerable pain and danger.

Tooth Crowding: It has been theorized that impacted wisdom teeth can put pressure on other teeth and cause them to become misaligned (crowded or twisted). This theory isn’t universally accepted by all dental professionals, and it has never been validated by any scientific studies.

Invisalign is the Clear Alternative to Braces.

Invisalign® takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist or orthodontist plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won’t even know you’re straightening your teeth.

  • More info on OSA....

Obstructive sleep apnea is the root/underlying cause of these symptoms.

A lack of proper breathing during sleep will lead to a lack of oxygen, causing a domino effect of health issues.

Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or shallow breaths during sleep. These episodes, which can last from a few seconds to minutes, can lead to severe effects on the body. It is an underlying cause of heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer's, dementia, etc. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which occurs when the muscles in the throat relax excessively, along with the tongue falling to the back of the throat. This leads to the narrowing or complete closure if the airway. Dentists are some of the few specialists trained to study the anatomy of the head/ face in depth, therefore are more likely to notice if their patients are having breathing issues. Clenching and grinding (bruxism) are common tickers that let dentists know that you are having breathing issues. Most dentists would prescribe a night guard, but that does not solve the root issue.

Clenching and grinding are caused by breathing issues, especially during sleep. This is a sign that the patient is most likely apnatic. Having a narrow palate also decreases the space for the tongue to rest, causing the tongue to fall back and block the airway. This results in snoring and/ or sleep apnea. Those who suffer from sleep apnea are predisposed to experiencing future heart issues, heart disease, and/or brain issues, such as heart attacks, strokes, dementia, and Alzheimer's. Asking your doctor for a sleep study is crucial in determining how apnatic you are. However, even those who are mildly apnatic are still in danger of experiencing heart issues. Using an oral sleep apnea device will create more room for the tongue to rest in the mouth by bringing the lower jaw forward and opening up the airway, thus allowing a greater amount of oxygen to enter the airway when sleeping. Invisalign or braces can also be used to treat OSA by repositioning the law or expanding the upper and lower palates to create more room for the tongue to improve breathing during sleep. All in all, using a dental appliance will improve one’s breathing and decrease the likelihood of developing heart disease or brain disease.
